The World of Upholstery
We pride ourselves on succeeding as the leading maker of custom, made to measure furniture. Our commitment to quality starts from sourcing the finest materials to hiring skilled craftspeople for every part of the manufacturing process. Each stage has a small team of makers who specialise in that specific skill. They all bring a serious level of expertise to the process.
Follow The World of Upholstery with us, and become inspired by the possibilities you can achieve.
1. Carpentry
Many of our skilled joiners have been in the business for over 10 years, utilising their craft is a more than a hobby for them – it is an art form. The centre of all our upholstered products starts, of course, with the frame, and therefore we only except the very best. We use solid hardwood beech for all our frames to create a robust foundation.
If you have any doubt, all of our frames have a lifetime guarantee.
2. Spraying, Polishing or Lacquering
Once the carpenters have completed the frame with the legs, they are handed over to the spray team. Choose from a wide array of finishes, whether you choose for a natural finish to bring out the grain in the wood or decide from our metallic finishes for a touch of glamour. Our design consultants will be able to help you with the endless choices on offer.
3. Body Work
This step consists of applying foam, springs and webbing to the frame. We use different densities of foam and different spring sizes to offer various comfort levels for our upholstery. We also use recycled foam to reduce our impact on the planet.
4. Pattern Cutting
With your chosen fabric we will cut a pattern to match the contours of your new upholstery piece. This stage requires a huge amount of skill because every fabric is slightly different depending on pattern, texture and composition. The cutting part of the process could take up to 3 hours alone. The cutters need to be mindful of wastage as to not waste the client’s chosen fabric, so the cutting is done traditionally – by hand.
5. Sewing Body and Cushions
The fabric has been cut and is passed to the sewing department who sew all of the cushions together, add zips and sew the body pieces together
6. Filling Cushions
We use a carefully calculated combination of duck down and duck feathers. The down feathers provide the softness and the initial sinking feeling for all important comfort. The feathers are slightly bigger and also provide comfort but also the sturdiness needed for the cushions to keep their shape over time. The feathers are filled into a cotton lining and then inserted into the sewn fabric cushions.
7. Upholstery
Once the body of your new piece has been sewn, it can be stapled to the frame. This takes care to ensure the fabric is not ripped and the patterns match the frame. Any chosen studs or further haberdashery and details will be added at this stage
We have recently moved our Production Facilities to our Luxury London Showroom and we would like to invite you to see our craftspeople hard at work, creating beautiful items.
